Energy experts continue to debate whether the world has already reached a peak in global oil output or if the moment of maximum yield still lies years ahead. But if we could look back to today from 50 years hence, the difference between a peak in 2008 or, say, 2015 is largely immaterial: for all practical purposes we are now perched on the summit of the depletion curve of world petroleum, and will remain in this territory - a rounded
crest when see… Continue

It was a happy birthday made all the happier for June Moxon and Ken Beidleman.
After 80 miles, four meals and three casinos, they expected the celebration of the day they share to cost them less than a gallon of gas.
“We’re going to eat and play on their money,” Beidleman said as he prepared to make the local gambling circle in the championship vehicle of the 1997 Kinetic Sculpture Race.
Sharply attired and appreciative of sweat-proof make-up, Moxon sat in the passenger seat of the vehicle th… Continue

Rice engineers ID 'green' methods to make valuable organic acids
HOUSTON -- June 30, 2008 -- In a move that promises to change the economics of biodiesel refining, chemical engineers at Rice University have unveiled a set of techniques for cleanly converting problematic biofuels waste into chemicals that fetch a profit.
The latest research is available online in the journal Metabolic Engineering. The new paper and others published earlier this year describe a new fermentation process that allo… Continue

The application of geothermal heating/cooling, also known as ground source heat pumps, has been named "the most energy-efficient and environmentally sensitive of all space conditioning systems", by the Environmental Protection Agency. The system's basic concept takes advantage of the earth's constant temperature, approximately 55 degrees, to heat and cool a building. By tapping this steady flow of heat from the earth in the winter, and displacing heat in the earth in the summer, a geothermal hea… Continue

KITTERY, Maine — It was decided at a meeting of the Kittery Energy Advisory Committee on Monday that the new cooperative being formed to purchase Bioheat will be handled by Cool Kittery. That would relieve the town of any potential liability and allow the expansion of the program to residents of other communities.
Bioheat is a blend of traditional No. 2 home heating oil and biodiesel. It is often referred to by the ratio of bio… Continue

Memo to Pentagon brass from the top United States commander in western Iraq: Renewable energy - solar and wind-power generators - urgently needed to help win the fight. Send soon.
Calling for more energy in the middle of oil-rich Iraq might sound odd to some. But not to Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Richard Zilmer, whose deputies on July 25 sent the Pentagon a "Priority 1" request for "a self-sustainable energy solution" including "solar… Continue

The skyrocketing cost of fuel isn't just hitting U.S. drivers in the pocketbook - it's blowing a bit of a hole in the Pentagon budget as well.
In a revised request for supplemental war funding for fiscal 2009, submitted May 2, defense officials have asked Congress to appropriate $3.69 billion for all fuels, a $2.2 billion increase over their initial request.
That, of course, looks far ahead and could still prove to be inadequate. According to… Continue

NEW ORLEANS - Nathan Robertson’s biggest problem isn’t that he is homeless — it’s that he’s not an alcoholic or a junkie.
Mike Miller, director of supportive housing placement for Unity of Greater New Orleans, found Robertson, 62, living under the Claiborne Avenue overpass in April. He figured the easiest way to get the disabled military veteran help was to contact the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ homeless program.
Robertson, using Miller’s cell phone, told the V… Continue

Washington - Americans rank last in a new National Geographic-sponsored survey released Wednesday that compares environmental consumption habits in 14 countries.
Americans were least likely to choose the greener option in three out of four categories - housing, transportation and consumer goods_ according to the assessment. In the fourth category, food, Americans ranked ahead of Japanese consumers, who eat more meat and seafood.
The rankings, called "Greendex," are the first t… Continue

Dear friend,
Reports from Moratorium Day #8, just over a week ago, are still coming in and being posted on the Iraq Moratorium website,

"Three of us came out to honor Iraq Moratorium on Friday, April 18, 2008 in front of the local post office.
We carried a sign and displayed it prominently, and we handed out flyers to interested people.
The weath… Continue

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... But here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.75 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon..
Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel , and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have… Continue

An expert on biodiesel set me straight recently about the vast differences between ethanol and biodiesel. Jerry Robock of Community Fuels runs the Hudson Valley Biodiesel Cooperative in Cottekill, N.Y., and responded to my column on biofuels.
His Community Fuels Web site points out that ethanol is a gasoline replacement distilled mainly from corn while biodiesel is a diesel replacement extracted from vegetable oil and fat.
Also, it take just about as much petroluem to make… Continue

Some people around Portland know Alfred “Fred” Padula for the pointed e-mails he fires at them from a computer in his energy- efficient home near Back Cove.
Padula is a prolific critic, a nag even, of local institutions and bureaucracies that he believes are not doing enough to fight global warming. And not many escape that list.
But other people know a different, more private, man. That’s the Padula who volunteers to help peopl…
